Question
I have recently noticed a nagging pain in my right forearm that does not go away and appears to be caused by use of my computer mouse.

Is this repetitive strain and is there a way of overcoming the problem apart from not using my PC?

Answer
The pain you describe is quite possibly related to the use of your computer mouse and likely to be due to repeated pressure on the wrist and/or elbow.

The symptom can relate to inflammation of tendons (tendonitis) or irritation of nerves (neuralgia) and be referred from the wrist or elbow into the forearm.

Your doctor would be able to advise the likely origin following an examination of the affected limb.

Rest may be indicated, along with the use of tubigrip support or anti-inflammatory medication, depending upon the severity of the condition.

I advise my patients who present with this problem to use a wrist pad, so as to ensure that they are not putting too much force through the wrist area.

The ergonomics of the mouse are very important and ideally we should carefully choose one that suits the size and shape of our hand and fingers.

You may find one of the larger mice available will allow you to navigate, point and click without your wrist being in contact with the desktop
